Who We Are
CReSTeD helps parents and those who advise them choose the right school or teaching centre for children with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD).
We were founded in 1989 and remain a dyslexia charity.
We recognise that dyslexia often occurs alongside other difficulties, including:
- Dyscalculia
- Dyspraxia
- ADD or ADHD
- Pragmatic and semantic language difficulties
Our Purpose
- Provide a Register of schools and centres that meet our standards for teaching pupils with SpLD.
- Offer a first step for families making important school placement decisions.
- Help educational advisers and professionals find trusted options for pupils with learning difficulties.
We do not advise on other aspects of school choice, such as Ofsted or ISI reports.
Parents should always visit schools or centres themselves before deciding.

Our Criteria
- We changed our focus from “dyslexia (SpLD)” to simply “SpLD” to reflect the wider range of learning needs.
- This ensures support for dyslexia is seen within a broader framework of learning difficulties.
- We are still a dyslexia charity but now cover a wider picture of support.
The CReSTeD Register
- Lists both state and independent schools and teaching centres.
- Most schools are mainstream but provide strong support for pupils with SpLD.
- Includes teaching centres for children who need extra help outside their day-to-day school.
- All listed schools and centres are visited regularly (at least every three years) to ensure standards remain high.
- Schools must inform us of any major changes that affect their provision.
Accessing the Register
- Available on our website (with links to all registered establishments and other helpful sites).
- Published in digital formats and also available as a printed copy from the CReSTeD Administrator.

Why the Register Is Trusted
- Parents who contact organisations like the British Dyslexia Association, Dyslexia Action or the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity are often referred to CReSTeD.
- Many local authorities use it to decide on funding for dyslexia placements.
- Educational professionals rely on it to advise families.
